I thought of doing Devil’s Tower and my intent was to include a quilt. After I transferred the image of the ‘rock’ to the panel I began to look for the appropriate quilt to use. I decided a Native American woven pattern would be more appropriate than a quilt of western heritage. I found a western Lakota Sioux porcupine quillwork design that also included beadwork. As I looked at the patterns and geometric shapes of the towering rock formations I could “see” small bead-like shapes at the top and other elongated rectangular shapes below them. I chose the golden eagle and clouds above to give Devil’s Tower the feeling of height and perspective.
